Japanese Language Proficiency Test
What is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test?
The JLPT is an internationally recognised qualification for non-native speakers, sponsored by the Japan Foundation and the Japan Educational Exchange and Services. In the UK the test is administered by the SOAS Language Centre, University of London (and separately at the University of Edinburgh) on behalf of the Japan Foundation.
JLPT Levels
In 2010 the old 4-level JLPT changed into a new 5-level JLPT: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. A middle level (N3) has been added to bridge the gap between the former Level 3 and Level 2.
For details of this change see on the official website of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services. That page is in Japanese.
