Student Profiles
The first cohort of students graduated from the MSc programme in 2008. Of these three continued on to the MPhil programme and are planning their doctoral research. We do not have full details of what everyone else is doing but three people have kept us informed about what they are doing.
Pichaya wrote to us, “Through my studies at the University of Oxford, I was able to build up my expertise in Japanese labour market while developing research skills, which I found very helpful in my current job as an associate at the Japanese Human Capital group at D...”
And James reports, ‘I’m currently working for A… (a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company) in London, as a consulting analyst. I found the course useful in preparing for this in several ways:
- knowledge of Japanese management practices and Japanese business/economy, which was very useful both for a grounding in macro-economic theory and for original insights into leading management consultancy techniques.
- ability to look outside the box and maintain a critical and original perspective
- in general, research and writing skills, and improved attention to detail
Andy told us that, ‘I’m currently working for N… in Frankfurt am Main as a contact assistant. I am part of a team that translates internal communications and files etc. for internal use. The work is mainly Japanese to English, but some is also English to Japanese. While I am not able to use the knowledge from some of the options I took in my current work, the lessons learned from the Japanese classes, newspaper reading classes and translation project etc have proved very valuable.
