Jiaan Yang has won the Arthur Stockwin Prize for her MSc dissertation, ‘Transactional Sex Without Men: Women’s Concerns, Intimacies and Distress in Japan’, which she completed under the supervision of Professor Roger Goodman. The Prize is awarded every year to the best MSc dissertation in Japanese Studies.
Jiaan’s dissertation is innovative in its examination of Rezu Fuzoku, which is virtually unstudied in academic research, and in its primary data source. Jiaan conducted interviews with female sex workers, a group to whom researchers rarely gain access. They took risks to assist in the research, in return for little concrete benefit. Jiaan is especially grateful to them for their help.
The Nissan Institute congratulates Jiaan on her achievement!
