2027 Japanese Government (MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarship: applications are now open for UK nationals

Applications for the 2027 Japanese Government (MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarship (Embassy recommendation) are now open for UK nationals, and application forms are available to download via the Embassy of Japan website.

This scholarship is tenable for 24 months from April 2027 or 18 months from September/October 2027, including six months of Japanese language education if required, with no prior knowledge of the Japanese language necessary for most subjects. Research or study can be undertaken in almost any field so long as it is related to a grantee's field of expertise or previous study, and this is for those who intend to obtain a Master's, professional, or doctoral degree in Japan.

Students with nationalities other than British should contact the Japanese Embassy in their home country for application procedures. The list of Japanese diplomatic missions can be found at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website.

We would be most grateful if you could share this information with your outstanding students in their final or penultimate year. A promotional flyer is available online.

Application documents must be submitted for preliminary selection to this email address to arrive no later than Monday 1 June, at 5pm (BST). Digital recommendation letters should be also emailed to the same address directly from referees.
