A world-renowned scholar of Japanese diplomacy, Dr. Pugliese is currently Lecturer at Oxford University and specially Appointed Professor (Japan Chair) at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. Through his study in Japan and extensive interaction with Japanese researchers, he has become a central scholar in the United Kingdom and Europe for the study of Japan’s diplomacy and is known for his accurate and reliable analysis.
To date, research on Japan’s diplomacy in Europe has been considered inadequate, with few researchers and biases in perspective; moreover, coverage of recent developments has been lacking. Dr. Pugliese has made a significant contribution by providing education at leading European educational and research institutions, thereby raising the level of research on Japanese diplomacy.
Dr Pugliese will receive the award on November 29th, 2023 in Tokyo.
