MSc Student Nairne Brown publishes new article "Ainu Language Death and Indications of Change in a Japanese-Dominant Environment" in Michigan Journal of Asian Studies

Nairne Brown, one of our students on the MSc in Japanese Studies programme, has published an article on "Ainu Language Death and Indications of Change in a Japanese-Dominant Environment" in the student-led Michigan Journal of Asian Studies. The research is based on one of her undergraduate research essays.

Nairne's current MSc research focuses on how participation in the activities of one's marginalised culture (language, arts, ceremonies) leads to higher perceived wellbeing amongst a community. She will focus on published data concerning the Ainu population of Hokkaido, Japan to build an overview of the current impact on cultural participation on wellbeing, and also critically examine why current survey methods may fall short of allowing us to build a more comprehensive answer.
