The Sasakawa Japanese Studies Post Graduate Studentships

The Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, University of Oxford invites applications for up to three Sasakawa Postgraduate Studentships in Japanese Studies, with the generous support by the Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.

The Faculty can nominate the candidate for the MSc/MPhil/DPhil studentship of £15,000. This studentship is initially for one year only, but may be renewable subject to satisfactory progress in subsequent years, up to a maximum of three years.  Please note that you will be required to reapply for the studentship each year, and that the GBSF will consider these applications on their merits. The GBSF cannot make a recurrent three year commitment to any one PhD candidate from year one.

Eligibility:

MSc or MPhil

  • Students planning to start an MSc or an MPhil degree
  • UK citizens are particularly encouraged to apply. Non-UK candidates are eligible only if they have been in the UK for at least 3 years immediately before the beginning of their MSc or MPhil study.
  • a first class undergraduate degree (or its equivalent for non-UK candidates)
  • Sasakawa Studentships cannot be combined with other sources of FULL funding.

DPhil

  • Students planning to start a doctoral degree programme
  • The studentships are open to the candidates of any nationality.  However, the studentship programme aims at encouraging the successor generation of UK specialists and experts on Japan, and therefore, UK nationals are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • a very strong pass or distinction at masters level.
  • Sasakawa Studentships cannot be combined with other sources of FULL funding.

Please note that the candidates need to apply for the department for admission to their course via the University online application system before they send their Sasakawa Studentship application. No separate application is required; candidates will be considered based on their application for graduate study.
