Departmental Lecturer in Japanese Social Anthropology
Dr Shilla Lee is the Departmental Lecturer in Japanese Social Anthropology, Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies and is affiliated with St. Antony College. Her research focuses on contemporary forms of traditional craft practices. She aims to challenge and expand the conventional notion of craftsmanship by exploring diverse socio-cultural influences. Specifically, she examines the impact of Japan’s ageing and declining rural communities, as well as the effect of government policies, on workshop spaces and craft skills. Additionally, her interest extends to the regional revitalisation movements in rural Japan.
